Frequently Asked Questions

Can we talk before meeting?

I strongly recommend we have a phone call consultation to discuss your concerns, expectations, and ensure that I am the right therapist for you.

How long does a session last?

Sessions can last from 45 minutes to an hour depending on the type of session you select.

What is the first session like?

We start by going over the intake paperwork you’ve completed and discussing confidentiality. Then, we’ll discuss your reasons for seeking therapy and begin setting goals for the sessions. You can also take this opportunity to delve into your personal history, giving me context for your current challenges. The first session is designed to build trust, establish the foundation for our future work together, and make sure the therapeutic process matches my needs and goals.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no limit on the number of sessions you can receive. The motivation for why you are seeking therapy may determine how long you remain in treatment. I have clients whom I worked with for months to years. You are free to decide to withdraw from therapy at any time.

How many sessions can I have a week?

This depends upon scheduling, your financial situation, and my recommendation based on clinical judgment. Some clients prefer to meet on an as-needed basis, monthly, biweekly, weekly, or multiple times a week. In addition to an individual session, I can offer a parent or family session. Session frequency may vary weekly and there is no frequency requirement.

What kind of therapy do you practice?

I practice an integrative approach, drawing from various therapeutic modalities to best meet your individual needs. Together, we can collaboratively choose the approaches that align best with your therapeutic goals and preferences.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a goal-oriented, problem-solving therapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors.

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness strategies, emphasizing emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness.

  • Brief Strategic Therapy targets specific issues by offering practical, solution-focused interventions to bring about positive change efficiently.

  • Applied Behavior Analytic strategies involve understanding behavior by analyzing its function in different contexts, allowing for targeted and effective intervention.

  • Play Therapy, particularly beneficial for children, utilizes play and creative expression to help explore and communicate feelings.

  • Psychodynamic therapy explores unconscious patterns and their impact on current thoughts and behaviors, offering insight into deeper aspects of the self.

  • Solution-Focused Therapy emphasizes identifying and building on existing strengths and resources to create practical solutions for current challenges.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require at least 24-hour notice of cancellation. Any cancellation under 24 hours is subject to the full-service fee.

Can you talk to my psychiatrist, previous therapist, or other professionals I see?

As per the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), I can discuss information, at your discretion, with other providers once you have filled out a HIPAA consent form. On the form, you can indicate the levels of information I am permitted to release and to whom I may release it. I can provide and discuss the consent form upon request.

How does teletherapy work?

Tele-therapy allows for safe, confidential, HIPAA-compliant video or phone sessions from your computer, tablet, or mobile phone. Guidelines for these sessions will be discussed during the consultation phone call.

How can my child make use of teletherapy?

Some children can make use of teletherapy services by talking or using home-based materials (e.g., toys, art supplies, puzzles.) To facilitate teletherapy I have created a virtual office, which allows for a positive, fun, and interactive virtual therapeutic environment.

Do you accept insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider and provide superbills at the end of each month for you to submit to your insurance company. If you are unsure of your out-of-network insurance benefits, I am happy to help you figure out your payment responsibility and insurance reimbursement rate.

How much do sessions cost?

Session prices vary depending on your out-of-network benefits. I am happy to discuss this with you or discuss a sliding scale agreement in circumstances where there is no insurance coverage or out-of-network benefits.

How do I explain therapy to my child and why it’s important for them?

Discussing therapy with your child involves conveying it as a supportive space to express feelings and thoughts. Framing it as an opportunity for personal growth and well-being can be beneficial. We can discuss this further in the first session before I meet with your child.

What if we are not a good match for therapy?

There’s always a chance we will not be a good match for treatment. If this is the case, I would be happy to refer you to a colleague after discussing what you are looking for in a provider.
